Best Luxury-Chic Resort in Tulum: Azulik

As part of our anniversary celebration, my boyfriend and I went to spend a couple days in Tulum after being in Cancun for a few days. We were looking for a unique hotel and overall experience that we do not have here in California and stumbled upon the Azulik. The Azulik is one of the most unique and luxury, chic, and ecofriendly hotels in the Tulum hotel area, and that’s what drew us in.

Our anniversary is in July, and we were so excited but also knew it would hot as heck, but we went anyway. The hotel itself is nestled in the middle of a jungle full of tree nests, restaurants and bars with amazing views, some animals believe it or not, and a museum!!

It was easy to miss the entrance of the resort because of all the greens but once we noticed we were so thrilled. They’ve got valet services hidden so just pull up in front of the resort and they will take care of your car. When we got there, we were led into the lobby through a path filled with rose water fountains and burning incense. The lobby was very boho, dimly lit and eco- friendly decorated. We were VERY grateful for their fruit infused water station because that heat was no joke. After checking in, they had a gentleman lead us into our room, and they took care of our luggage because, remember, there is NO ELEVATORS, and it’s going to be very hard to haul all those bags up to your room. I would advise you pack lightly since clothing is optional here ;).

Before getting into our room, we were shown where the activity board is, the restaurant KIN TOH, and the path down to the beach. We were also offered to participate in a Mayan cleansing welcome ceremony. The ceremony basically is supposed to cleanse you from all your negative thoughts and energy and make you feel lighter and more connected to nature. It’s done with incense, musical instruments and Mayan chants. I’d highly recommend participating in one as it was one of the most iconic things I’ve experienced here.

The room itself was tiny but we had booked their smallest villa. The bed is also pretty small and had a net over it and some flowers decorated for our anniversary. The bathroom is located in the room with a small wooden door that offers some privacy but not much. The room was romantically lit with small candles scattered across the walls. There’s A/C that offers some cooling, but you can’t change the temperature. For those who can’t sleep in the heat, I’d suggest you go in the cooler months (March to early May). There’s a single outlet in the room so bring an extension cord if you need to charge multiple devices.

My absolute favorite part of the villa was the Mayan tub in the room, and the outdoor tub in the porch area. If you’ve never experienced showering in a tub without a shower head, you’re in for a wild ride. The Mayan tub had all toiletries, and you would use a half coconut to scoop out the water and wash off. I loved having a truly nature inspired experience that we don’t normally think of in your regular life let alone in a luxury resort, but that’s kind of the point. You would contact the front desk (via WhatsApp) when you want your outdoor tub filled and they’d send someone to set it up for you. Nothing here is electricity operated so they will do everything for you by hand. It was really nice coming back to the room after a long day of exploring and just relaxing in the outdoor tub with cool water, a drink and listening to the animals roaming around the jungle.

The beach was beautiful and clean and there’s a bar set out there for drinks if you’d like. REMEMBER, this beach is “clothing optional “, and you might get caught off guard with people walking around the beach naked!! We got unlucky with seaweed season, so we weren’t able to swim, but if you plan better, the water is gorgeous.

Don’t forget to visit SFER IK, a unique and eco-friendly art museum with some of the world’s best visual artists artisanal work displayed in an interdisciplinary creative sphere with no straight walls, floors, or ceiling, located right in the hotel. It was something so unique, that only an experience like this could make you appreciate the simple forms of art.

Lastly, the best of all, you absolutely must visit is the KIN TOH Restaurant and bar. This rooftop bar has breathtaking, and I mean BREATHTAKING, views of the jungle and tree nests around. For a romantic dinner, you could rent out a secluded nest overseeing the water and the jungle for a once in a lifetime experience. The nests’ rental fees start at about $650 with a minimum charge per person, but it’s definitely worth it if you are celebrating a special occasion. The rooftop bar is also gorgeous at sunset where you can sip a drink and if you’re brave enough, hang out above the jungle trees on the nets they have set. It was pretty scary for me because I’m terrified of heights, but I ended up having the courage to get on and relax. Be brave, it’s fun!

Whether you choose to stay here for a couple days, or just drop by to spend the day exploring, having a bite or a couple drinks, the AZULIK is an absolute must see in Tulum. The uniqueness of this hotel offers an experience that is unparalleled, and a taste of luxury while being connected to nature and art. Not to mention the endless Insta worthy spots or photo opportunities found here! If you’re a travel influencer, or a travel nomad, stop by this hotel and let me know what you think. I share a whole lot about this stay and all the other unique stays I find here and on my Instagram. I hope you enjoyed experiencing this luxury, affordable and eco-friendly unique stay review with me.
